By all means, return the unit and get a refund. If you only have the $300 to work with, consider the Phillips AV receiver. I think you would be quite impressed by how the Phillips receiver will sound for that kind of money.

If you had $400 to spend, I would look for a used or demo Denon 2800 AVR.
