Are projections TV's 'maintenance free', or do they need aligning, special care, etc.??

I can't decide whether to go with a small projection or a large tube TV. I had heard rumors that digital projection TV's require much care and attention, and that something my misalign after a while. What care do they need? And are there some projection TV's that 'align themselves' or whatever? As you can tell, I am a newbie, but eagerly learning about A/V in general. Thank you!
