Buy new VCR or repair old one?

My VCR, a 10 year old Mitsubishi (top of the line at the time), has bitten the dust: it will not load a tape.

I've been disappointed with new VCR offerings: they all seem to be very lightweight (implying use of plastic vs. metal parts), and the visual search and slow-mo features seem inferior to the old Mitsubishi (unless I spend several hundred $).

The local repair shop's opinion is that new VCRs are essentially junk,
"built to last only a year or so"...but of course, their view may well be biased.

What would you do? Buy new or fix the old one?
