Not really high-end but a good cause

My parents, who are on Social Security, need a new TV because my stepmother is having some difficulties with vision. They want a 27 inch. I'm recommending they get a flat screen. Any recommendations as to brands, reputable net dealers who offer good discounts, best bag for the buck, etc? Will flat screen give the best picture or is there a model that rivals flat screen at a lower price?
Any info or tips are greatly appreciated.
