Re: Sony STR-DA50ES

Richard,

I own an STR-DA555ES, which was the replacment for the DA50ES. My recollection is that the addition of 6-channel analog inputs and a modification of the touchscreen remote were the only differences. I am very happy with the DA555ES. I believe that it compares very favorably with a Marantz SR-7000, a Yamaha 595a and a Denon 1600, which family members own. I was able to do a true A/B comparison with a Denon 3300 and found it was certainly in the same league. Too many people criticize Sony because of all the sound fields, etc., assuming that the money went into the bells and whistles and not the power supply, transistors, etc. That simply demonstrates that the critical ones don't realize how cheap the DSP chips are.

Is it time to replace the Sony? Not unless you need DTS-EX (or ES or THX-ES or whatever they are calling it), DPL II or similar new formats. Frankly, IMHO, I don't think you'll get a significant improvement in sound unless you move to separates. Do good (mid to upper end) receivers sound different? Perhaps a little. Are you going to be blown away by the difference? Probably not, IMO. Good luck.

Jim
