Sony WEGA kv-36fv15 and Progressive Scan DVD

I have a Sony kv-36fv15 and am about to buy a DVD player. I am a relative novice at this so I need some help.
1) Could someone please tell me if my television is compatible with a progressive scan DVD player or if such a DVD player would be wasted on my tv. I can't figure out if I'd be able to tell a difference with my tv.

2) If I wouldn't be able to take advantage of progressive scan, would pretty much any interlaced DVD player provide the same quality?
