New Parents Need Help (quickly) With DV Camera Choice

Hello,
My sister just had a baby boy and she and her husband asked me for DV Cam recommendations. I don't know as much as many of the posters here so I'm hoping for some advice.
I need something in the $600 - $900 range that also takes stills and is compatible with both Mac & Windows. The catch is the Mac is an older imac that only has USB ports and the PC is a laptop w/Win2000 (NT based). I imagine I can use a camera that has a serial port for the PC and a firewire (with an adaptor) for the Mac.
If I'm correct about that, the main concern is software.
