Looking for a basic reliable DVD player

I am new to the DVD world and would like some help:
My budget is up to $500. I am looking for a basic single-disc DVD player for video mainly with ok sound, will not be used as a CD player, that has basic simple features.
I have read that some manufactures from Audioreview.com, such as Sony's prodcuts have a fair amount of problem, I am looking for something reliable.
Another question was: does small maunfacturer like Marantz made better quality product than mass manufacturer like Sony?
