JVC Launches Comprehensive Line Up for 2000 Featuring High-Performance Super VHS Decks

Orlando, FL, February 13, 2000

JVC, the inventor of VHS video and the undisputed industry leader in Super VHS, is introducing a new lineup of video decks for the year 2000, half of which consist of high-resolution Super VHS.
As made clear by the growing popularity and interest in home theater systems featuring big-screen TV, as well as trial runs of digital broadcasting, the environment is set for a recording technology that offers high-resolution results.

JVC's Super VHS ET function provides a powerful solution for this demand, since it is able to record high-resolution Super VHS signals on regular VHS tapes (JVC HG cassette recommended). Super VHS ET satisfies the requirements of consumers who want an easy way to
upgrade their existing home theater systems with its 400 lines of resolution while enjoying low running cost with tape economy.

Also prominent in this year's line is a multitude of user-friendly features that make it easier for anybody to use and enjoy video, including their new Video Navigation function which
enables menu-based pinpoint access to recorded programs, as well as JVC's proprietary Pro-Slow and TimeScan functions that open up entirely new ways to view video. To address the full spectrum of demand, JVC's 2000 lineup includes entry- and mid-level VHS decks that
are an ideal choice for first-time buyers as well as second decks for the home. In all cases, JVC video recorders come with the assurance of quality, from the inventor of VHS.

High-End Picture Performance with Super VHS and DigiPure

For those looking to upgrade their VCR to one that offers high picture quality to match their home theater system, JVC offers four Super VHS models. Super VHS high-band recording technology delivers 400 lines of horizontal resolution (approx. 60% more than the 240 lines of conventional VHS) and supports separate luminance (Y) and chroma (C) input/output for purer signal transmission when recording from a high resolution picture source or viewing on a high-resolution big-screen TV.

But the breakthrough that got people’s attention and put JVC at the forefront of the high-resolution VCR field was Super VHS ET (Expansion Technology). Super VHS ET was made possible with their newly developed High-Resolution Recording System,High Performance Video Head and Pre-Amp which collectively enable HG (High Grade) VHS tapes to handle more information. Based on these technological advances by JVC engineers, Super VHS ET makes it possible to record the high-resolution signal on affordable and more widely available VHS cassettes. Available on all of JVC Super VHS decks, the Super VHS ET function lets users increase tape economy while enjoying nearly the same picture quality as they would get using Super VHS tape. And, of course, Super VHS tapes can be used to assure the highest possible quality, such as when creating master tapes.

Featured on their top two models is a group of picture improvement technologies collectively called DigiPure Technology. They include the Digital Wide TBC (Time Base Corrector) which digitally removes jitter from fluctuating video signals; Precision 3-D Color Circuit which provides clear color separation without bleeding and sharpens image edges; Digital 3-D YNR/CNR which removes video noise and improves the S/N ratio by approximately 3dB; Precise Digital 3-D Y/C Separation which improves S/N over a wide range, reduces stationary image border dot interference and improves moving images with its Digital Comb Filter; plus the Digital R3 Picture System which applies edge correction to the Y (luminance) signal to enhance detail. Providing a solid foundation for the formidable list of DigiPure technologies is a Digital 3 Dimensional Circuit with 2MB or 4MB Frame Memory (depending on model).

Pro-Slow and TimeScan with Dynamic Drum System

Pro-Slow and TimeScan are two JVC exclusive features that give the user total control over the speed and direction of the playback picture. JVC's proprietary Dynamic Drum System and digital frame memory are combined for the Pro-Slow function which enables smooth, seamless slow motion like people are used to seeing on TV (unlike conventional slow motion on video decks, which is actually frame after frame of still pictures). Also, thanks to the built-in Digital Audio Memory, the soundtrack is played back at a slower pace to match the picture but the pitch remains normal, so dialog becomes slower but the voices don't get lower.

The TimeScan function, on the other hand, lets the user speed up the playback picture (max. 7-times normal speed) without the distracting horizontal noise bars you would usually get on-screen during high-speed playback. This is a great time saver, as it lets anyone catch the day's news and other programs, with clearly legible captions and subtitles, in a fraction of the time it would normally take. And since the Digital Audio Memory helps keep the soundtrack
comprehensible, you can quickly and effectively search for any scene you want to watch based on the sound as well as the picture. These high-end functions are equipped on JVC's flagship Super VHS deck.

High Fundamental Picture Quality

Very high picture quality is assured throughout the lineup, without exception, by way of the Active Video Calibration or Auto Picture function which assesses the condition of the tape and of the
video heads and automatically makes adjustments to optimize playback picture performance (Active Video Calibration is also effective during recording). Additionally, Procision 19µ Heads boost EP picture quality to near-SP levels with its precision-machined heads that are only
19 microns wide. The Picture Control function provides 4 modes that can be selected to best match the program content and viewer preferences. And a full set of HQ circuits are also present on all decks in the lineup.

Easy and Accurate Recording

JVC decks provide a number of functions to allow easier timer-recording including VCR Plus+ instant programming, made even more convenient with a Cable Box Controller (provided or available with a mail-in coupon on some models) that automatically switches channels on a set-top box. Minimal set-up operations are necessary for the VCR Plus+ feature since the system's Guide Channels are not input during set-up, but instead are input on-the-fly during timer programming once per each new channel, with no inputting necessary for channels that you've already used before. Manual programming is also made easy with their Express Programming buttons on the remote control. Rec Link also makes it easy to record from external sources since it enables the video deck to detect when a connected video source (with timer) turns on and automatically starts recording from it. And if two timer-programmed shows have overlapping times, a new Timer Overlap Warning displays the conflicting programs on-screen so the user can choose which overlapped portion gets priority.

Incredible Convenience

The Video Navigation function available on JVC's top Super VHS deck makes program access and tape library management a breeze.
This incredibly convenient function builds a table of contents on every tape you record, assigning a unique number to each tape, and lets you input tape titles and program titles (approx. 2000 titles can be stored). The VCR stores all data in memory, allowing tapes to be sorted by tape number, date, and category, for pinpoint location of the program you're looking for. Just choose the desired program from the on-screen list, and the deck automatically rewinds and plays the program.

JVC's overall ease of use is boosted by Plug & Play installation which automatically sets the tuner and clock; Shuttle Plus which offers all-in-one access to traditional Jog/Shuttle functions, Index Search, as well as On-Screen Menu operations in a single button; a Multi-Brand
TV/Cable/DBS Compatible Remote that puts total control over the VCR, TV, cable, and satellite receivers in a single unified remote hand unit; a Multilingual Color On-Screen Menu that offers a choice of English, French or Spanish operating languages; Head Cleaning Warning to advise users when they should use a head cleaning tape; Auto SP/EP Timer Recording which switches from SP to EP automatically if necessary to fit the entire program on the tape; and, on their non-Super VHS decks, SQPB (Super VHS Quasi Playback) which allows playback of Super VHS recorded tapes (with normal VHS picture quality). Also, JVC's Surge Protection Circuitry absorbs and grounds power surges (under 20kv) to help protect the VCR's internal circuits from unstable power, and JVC's video decks are Energy Star compliant, consuming less than 4W while in the standby mode.

Lineup Overview

First-time purchasers may feel good selecting the HR-VP48 a solid 4-head model that incorporates Pro-cision 19µ Heads, SQPB, VCR Plus+, Auto Picture, Plug & Play for simple installation, and so much more. Customers wanting to make an easy transition to the home theater sound of Hi-Fi VHS should take a look at the budget-minded HR-VP58, which adds Hi-Fi VHS performance and Multi-Brand TV/Cable/DBS Compatible Remote convenience to the features found on the HR-VP48.

JVC also offers the HR-VP680, a model which offers the same features as the HR-VP58, but in a larger size chassis.

The Super VHS portion of the lineup starts with the HR-S3800, which offers Super VHS quality and Super VHS ET economy, and Active Video Calibration.

The HR-S4800 provides all the features of the S3800, and adds the professional-style editing capabilities with Insert Editing, Flying Erase Head, and Audio Dubbing.

Near the top of the spectrum is the HR-S7800, which takes a powerful step up in picture performance by way of its DigiPure Technology with 2MB frame memory.

At the summit of JVC's 2000 VCR lineup sits the HR-S9800 -- the ultimate home theater deck, with the incredibly high quality picture generated by Super VHS and DigiPure Technology with 4MB frame memory, as well as a Ghost Reduction Tuner. This high-end deck also features Pro-Slow and TimeScan, as well as Jog/Shuttles on both the deck and remote, and a J-Terminal for computer connectivity.
