Hi John: The situation is the same in Canada, where we have NTSC. In the US there is limited programming and only in large urban centres. Networks want the extra bandwidth to sell more cell phones, not to improve quality of TV.

To answer the original question, unless you have planning on a progressive scan DVD, there is little reason to buy a HDTV right now. It will be about 5 to 10 years before it takes off, with enough programming to make worthwhile, if it does at all. Plus you have to deal with the bars at the sides or top& bottom. I have seen progressive scan tvs and they look great. As a plus you don't get fatigued as quickly watching progressive scan. I would go for something of that nature. Make sure it fits the space you have.
