I use an RSP-980 (the model before yours) which I believe has the same DPL function as yours. My DPL seems fine (I recall the World Series and NFL Football being pretty cool). I assume you have set the surround levels properly (I use a Radio Shack sound level meter). Also, maybe somehow you're using the variable outs from the TV (instead of fixed). Just some thoughts...
