I agree with GaryM, run it straight if you can.

I have the same tv and the problem I ran into was that the wega has only one s-video input in the back and I have two s-video sources (sat. and dvd). I therefore ended up having to run all the s-video cables through my pre, which fortunately has "broadcast quality" video switching capabilites (blah, blah, blah) and does not degrade the quality of the video. Sounds like your pre is maybe degrading the video quality enough to bother you. If you only have one s-video source, run it straight to the tv. If that still isn't so hot, try a better s-video cable. There is a guy on ebay that sells beldon s-video cables for about $40 in 2m lengths, I recall. These are pretty good and 100X better than the crappy little cables that come with consumer components.
