Re: Sony brightness problem

I don't mean this to be sarcastic, but I think your TV is about done for.

All Sony TVs tend to develop the color balance problem eventually as a result of phosphor burn-out. While all TV will eventually run into this problem, Sony TVs are particularly more susceptible to it for couple of reasons in my *theory*. First, the Sony TVs' factory setting for brightness is way too high, resulting in premature burn-out unless the consumer turns the brightness down and keeps it down after purchase. Second, the problem is compounded by the fact that the phosphors in Sony tubes are slightly off color to start with. The result is the pinkish tint you see which you can't really get rid of without affecting some other quality of the picture such as the brightness or shadow details.

If the problem appeared after 10 years of use, then you got a pretty good use out of it. I have seen Sony TVs develop the same problem only after 5 or 6 years.

I have seen Toshiba and Panasonic (tube) TVs do much better in terms of keeping the color balance over their service life. Their color balance is more neutral to start with and tend to stay that way longer, from what I can tell. Also, for your next TV, you may consider a rear-projection model, which is far less susceptible to such problems, if kept in proper calibration.
