Center Channel Speaker Dilemma?

206.253.218.74

I am condsidering upgrading/changing my current h.t. center channel speaker(NHT typcial mtm array) and am confused.

If I am understanding reading about ideal sound dispersion(a broad horizontal band along the couch/viewing area) the ideal MTM speaker array should be placed vertically, not horizontally as current aesthetics/marketing propaganda/space available dictates. Why is the h.t./speaker industry not forthcoming about this?(see Lynn Olsen's Positive Feedback column during 1998)

If I only have space available for a typical horizontal mtm speaker(approx. 10" high x 24" wide) would it be better sonically to try something like a coaxial mid-tweeter speaker ala KEF or Vandersteen? Any suggetions in the $300-$500 budget range?

Any suggestions/advice on getting the best center channel performance?

Thanks,
KM
