Thanks for saying this is *supposed to be fun*. People I know get into home theater because it seems fun to them.

Anyway, based on the way we perceive sounds from behind or to the side (there was a good article in Absolute Sound several issues ago) you may be happy for quite a while going with your existing speakers. After a minor amount of fiddling around, I did fine using my modified Spica TC50 speakers as rears with B&W 802 Series 3 mains.

Maybe I am just not as critical with theater, but I can't get that worked up about the sound beyond a certain point -- don't get me started on stereo however ;-).
