Hi John - I didn't have time this morning for a more verbose reply so here is a little more information for you. As you know the Theta III is based on the cld-704 chassis. It was reported in SGHT that Theta made picked the 704 because all of the more robust cld-97 chassis left available were bought up by Macintosh for their pioneer-based LD player. However I tend to believe that the 704 was chosen because it has superior resolution over the 97 (704 = aprox 460 lines horiz resolution vs. aprox 425 lines of the 97) and a more reliable side turn mechanism. Pioneer hand-tunes the elites for superior color saturation which lowers the resolution slightly from the 450 line standard. Factory tolerances on the 704 were incredibly tight and a 704 in good condition can slightly exceed the 450 line standard. The 704 is superior to the 97 IMO (I have owned both).Aside from the obvious HD chassis and faceplate, the Theta III has a propriatary audio board of excellent quality and upgraded analog and digital power supplies. The motor assembly is standard 704 and is prone to main bearing failure. It is a readily available part, not too expensive, but must be installed by a tech you trust who is very experienced with Pioneer LD mechanisms as it is major surgery and can affect laser alignment, disc table timing and the gamma turn flip subsystems if it is not done correctly. I am not sure that I would trust anyone other than Theta to perform the work and would surely consult with them before risking damage to so fine a player!
