With that tight of a budget...

he's much better off buying a stand-alone HD RPTV, such as one of the models in the Sony KP series. He'll get better color (including black levels), resolution, and at under two grand, a much better value, compared with just about any LCD projector in the $2000-3000 bracket.

One thing to consider--even after he's found the right projector, he'll still have to drop at least a grand (probably a lot more) for a decent motorized screen, plus the monitor ceiling mount!
