The reason for the decoder in the DVD player is simply for giving the user options. You can decode via the player and not need a pre-pro, sending the 6 analog signals to their respective amps right from the DVD player (the low cost option). The other option is to send the digital signal to a pre-pro and decoding there and managing all of the various settings, usually offering higher quality DAC's and decoders, and more management options. In either case you still need amplification for all 6 channels.
