Newbie to video, question-got hi def box installed,

but installer ran it out the component outs directly to he TV componet ins. That means I cannot video record it, since my video recorder has no component "in".

Am I really getting hi def through a component out?
Don't I need to use that little IEEC 1994 out slot, and a line WITH A (DIFFERENT) end to the HI-def input slot on the TV?

Are there DVD recorders with component in's so I can record off the hi-def box?
Any cheaper work arounds than buying another DVD recorder to match the one I bought two months ago?

TIA
