Dish Networks Tivo

My wife and I bought a Dish networks tivo/satellite receiver almost 4 years ago. Although it works fine, I am worried about losing the HD someday, and would like to put a larger drive in. I've heard it uses a version of linux. Is it possible to copy the drive to a windows machine, then format a new disk with it on? I could makeup a linux machine if I have to. Any help or advice will be appreciated!
