Toshiba-SD9200 question

I have a Toshiba SD-9200 D.V.D. player. Love it. Well, my remote has ceased to work. I ordered a replacement ($65.00 with shipping and handling). It has yet to arrive, and I expect it will take another week. The unit is very spartan, but it does contain a play button. Well, I tried to play a D.V.D. last night, intuitively hitting the play button once the menu appears. And nothing. Nada. It would not play the disc. It would work with The Bishop's Wife, the old Cary Grant film. But not the two newer discs I tried. That tells me that the unit is functioning. In any event, there were no problems when the remote was functioning. I reviewed the manual, and there is nothing there about me owning an expensive paperweight if the remote is broken. I called Toshiba, and their employee knew as much about the unit as the clerk who takes my money at the gas station.

It seems to me that only a moron would design a D.V.D. player that cannot play a disc without a remote control, given how relatively common it is for a remote control to be lost, misplaced, or destroyed. Any ideas or experiences?
