Questions about Pioneer AV receiver

I recently got a Pioneer AV receiver on ebay. I would greatly appreciate answers to a couple questions.

First, I connected the DVD player to the receiver with both the analog and digital connections. The digital input worked for a couple weeks, but now it has stopped. The DVD audio output works on the analog but not the digital inputs. I have checked the connections. I don't know whether the DVD player or the receiver is at fault. What is the easiest way to tell which whether the problem is the receiver or the DVD player is the problem?

Second, assuming I have to run the DVD player on analog, will I still get the benefits of Dolby Digital decoding?

Third, on all sources, the sound of the receiver seems to be slightly brighter and louder on stereo than any of the surround modes. Is this normal?

Thanks for answers to any of these questions.

Thanks.
