"Reducing any of the above to reduce the contrast results in dulling the picture to unsatisfactory."Sounds like you would need to get into the Service Menu to fix that problem (a job for a tech or someone who really knows their way around the Service Menu -- most definitely not for the average person). The Picture adjustment in your User Menu corresponds to the Contrast setting.
Here's another option. Have you tried a calibration disc (Digital Video Essentials or Avia)? Both discs will work with the User Menu settings and do not require access to the Service Menu in order to help you get a better picture from your display. I've read comments from others that DVE is available at some libraries (free use!) and movie rental stores (a couple of $). One of these may help your situation as they would at least show you how far off the settings are and may even enable you to get a satisfactory picture without having to call out and pay a tech if the the display isn't still under warranty.
