DVD HDD recorders--too soon?

The concept of a HDD DVD recorder is highly appealing - despite the multiple formats, which does'nt appear to be of great concern.

Researching Net buzz on some models has turned up:
The TV Guide programming feature (sub-contracted/co-branded through one "Gemstar" company), appears to be highly iffy. Read of a model that had *NO manual programming, so if the TV Guide thingie didn't function...sorry. (!)

Fan noise. Yeah, they have fans. Read of one model in which the fan ran 24/7, even when the unit was turned off. (!!) In general, fan noise was a common complaint. And you aren't going to see fan noise specs from manufacturer.

All of the better models have the same Audio and Video DAC specs, *except the Sonys, which have the better Video DAC specs, but a lesser Audio DAC spec.

Better off waiting 'till next years' models?
