just taking a chance, Yamaha

HTR 5950, 7 channel 120 w/ch. He c/o it sounded "bright and thin" out of the box. I was visiting the city, so I helped him hook up simple 2 channel stereo--sounded pretty smooth and nice to me.

I have no experience with this thing and he wanted to take out the Sony Dolby Digital device and use the Yamaha only. So, I tried to hook up 4.1 (phantom center). I was doing the manual setup protocol, could not get receiver to remember it. Then tried the YPAO thing, and the receiver panel light YPAO stayed lit, and no sound came out. We got to error warning in the protocol, showing speakers were out of phase, but no further. What should I do to get the thing to play again, since it seemed stuck at that point? No output.

Actually, I was visiting and had to leave for the airport. He is to call the dealer who sold this to him and have them do it, but I was hoping to do it for him. Those guys also aren't audiophiles.

Any advice from those who have tried the Yamaha YPAO protocol? The instruction booklet wasn't that revealing, at least to this multichannel newbie (with lots of 2 channel experience).
