Re: Best DVD Player Under $100?

toshiba is also one of the lowest rated DVD player manufacturers. the average feedback score i've seen for toshiba is a 2-3 out of 5. that isn't too reassuring.

as mentioned, the panasonic S77 is a very good unit that outperforms $800 players for video quality in the shootouts i've seen. the ONLY thing wrong with it is it exhibits the macroblocking issue that seems to plague farajouda video upsampling units. otherwise, the S77 passed nearly every test where most players flunk several categories.

i just purchased a sony DVPNC875VS 5 disc changer for $131 delivered because:
it's silver and will match my other gear
it's a 5 disc changer
it will play SACDs which are more common than DVD-As
and
it has a 108MHz X 12 bit video DAC for better quality than units that commonly have 54MHz X 10 bit video dacs. no-one complained about video or sound quality for this unit.

the unit recieved mostly favorable reviews and the only common complaints about it were that the display is too bright (it has 3 stage dimming though) and that it will only shuffle CD tracks on one CD at a time and not do 5 disc random. big deal!

the disc changer is supposed to be quiet, the unit offers video tweaking (contrast, saturation, sharpness etc. sounds great!) and is reported to be great at reading scratched rental discs that other players won't do.

i was looking for a cheap panasonic 5 disc unit to replace my onkyo which is starting to act up again, but for $31 more, went with a sony for SACD (vs DVD-A) and high spec video DACs instead. my reciever is a panasonic.

the panasonic S77 is probably better at video, but it's a one disc unit.

you can get the DVPNC875VS for under $90 if you buy it refurbished. wait a few days, and i'll have a review of it to post.

one other possibility that you might look into is the samsung upsampling DVD players. they have gotten mostly good reviews (but seem to have issues with locking up to panasonic recievers) especially for the upsampling models and their brushed aluminum front panels make them look more expensive than they are.

the last time i looked at consumer review, panasonic and samsung were two of the highest rated brands for reliability and it looks like nowadys that panasonic is trying to regain some of it's former glory with superior products. my SA-XR55 reciever spanks the daylights out of my onkyo in every way.
