upconversion of burned dvd's

are the positives of a upconverting dvd player lost if you are watching a burned dvd-r disk? i'm a big wrestling fan, but i hate the american wwe product, i buy a ton burned dvd-r wrestling shows from japan. so my question is, if ur watching a dvd-r, do u still get the benifits of upconverting, or is there something lost in the process of a burned disc that would allow you to benfit from upconverting.
