Things are still unclear

Here's something from the Sony announcement:

"The BDP-S1 player offers uncompressed multi-channel linear PCM digital audio output via HDMI, delivering optimum surround sound to an HDMI- equipped receiver. The player also has optical digital audio out and 5.1 channel decoding capability for backward compatibility with existing receivers. In addition, the unit has a separate audio circuit board, finely tuned audio components, rigid beam chassis construction, drive brackets and off center insulator feet."

I attended a presentation from Toshiba about the Toshiba HD-DVD. They said that on their player, the lossless audio is only transmitted through the hdmi cable. It also has a 5.1 digital out, but it works with the Dolby Digital track, and not the high resolution, 8-channel, lossless track.

I suspect that it's also true with the Sony. How would the player convert the high resolution 8 channel track to 5.1 high resolution (up to 192/24) that all receivers could process?
