My new Panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma has a "Just" mode that stretches only the sides while the center of the picture remains undistorted. It is done so well that you need a crawling text at the bottom to tell (by the way the text stretches at each end).Perhaps other manufacturer's have equivalent modes.
