When these "blackouts" occur, what's going on? Are you in the middle of a movie, fast forwarding through the disc, skipping chapters, etc?If it happens when you are doing something other than just watching a movie, it's a polling-handshake problem and I doubt you'll be able to fix it. If it occurs when you're just chillin' and watching a movie, then I would suspect cable length (though that shouldn't be a problem with HDMI at the length you're using due to HDMI's equalization feature) and/or the HDMI T/R chips in the said equipment.
Have you tried another DVD player or source with an HDMI output? If it still happens, it may be the display not getting along with the sources you're using. If they work fine, then I'd suspect the DVD player you're using.
Unfortunately, it really sounds like there is a polling problem (occasional checks due to the handshake protocol for HDMI) with the particular equipment you are using. For many people, HDMI can really be a bitch. The originators/designers should have mandated "signal-lock" for all equipment, but that would have been too logical.
