IMO anything in the path of ANY signal is going to equate to some signal loss and it's going to come down to how much is too much for you. I used to use a small inline filter to help remove 60hz hum from my cable coax and it definately helped, but I felt like I was loosing some of the signal strength and chose to remove it. I also use a Vansevers Clean Line to clean up the AC; which has no coax inputs; this unit definately helps with the audio portion of my system. I think you should weight out the lesser of two evils; view it both ways and make the decision for yourself. As far as protection goes, I would want the most protection I could get for my dish. It most definately should be well grounded (to the ground) and having the HTS3500 will also "help" in the protection, but if you have a direct or near direct hit, well, there's really not much that can withstand lightening hits.
