Best budget HT-in-a-box?

If youve read some of my recent posts you know that my dad got a nice new 42in lcd tv for xmas. Ive been helping him get it all set up and the stock speakers are garbage. Hes also looking fior an inexpensive dvd player. So I thought maybe one of the cheap Ht systems would be the best way to go. He isnt an audio./videophile in any way shape or form. Hes just looking for better sound than the stock speakers, especially in the bass, the stock speakers have none. Hes looking in the $300 range. I know thats not much, but thats what he wants to spend and it seems there are actually quite a bit of choices for under $300. Now what im trying to do is find out which are the best in that price range. So does any one have any recomendations?? The room is not very large around 14x10ft or so, and the system will be used strictly for movies and tv, no music.
