Re: Pioneer Elite DV-09 or Denon DVD-5000?

The Denon 5000 certainly isn't a rebadged Panasonic. It is built like a tank. But the Pioneer is a work of Japanese art as well, and is equally impressive. I have not a/b'd the two, but I have noticed that the Pioneer is a much quiter player when playing DVDs. The Denon seems uncommonly noisy, and I've seen this on three separate players. It's probably the noisiest DVD player I've ever heard. Two local dealers carry both Denon and Pioneer. I asked them both which they liked better, and they both said the Pioneer. The Pioneer player is also in their reference HT system, so that must say something. Stereophile's Guide To Home Theater tested both players. The reveiwer (forget which one) loved them both, but the Pioneer stayed on as his reference player while the Denon went back to the manufacturer. Both are excellent players, and I'm sure you'd be satisfied with both, but the evidence seems to point to the Pioneer as the superior player...and it doesn't hurt that it's $500 cheaper. The drawer is cool too with that airlock.

Which would I pick? Neither, since I'm happy with my $350 Toshiba and find it foolish to spend $2000 or $2500 on a player that will be obsolete in two years. But everyones priorities are different, and given the choice I'd take the Pioneer. Good luck!
