TV switches button question

209.246.71.253

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I recently purchased a 35 inch TV from my older brother. It is a Mitsubishi and the model number is cs-3515R. Several of the features that this model offers are not explained very well in the manual which brings us to my question. Firsly, what exacly is the function of the degauss button? Is it for use in correcting damage caused by magnetic fields? Also how long does it take to cause permanent damage to a TV from a magnetic field. I'm asking this because I fear that I may have harmed the TV because of improper sub placement. This brings us to my next inquiry. On the set there are two switches. One has three positions while the other has two. The one that has the three positions is labeled direction. Its three positions from left to right are S at the left, neutral in the middle and N at the right. The other switch is marked Strengh and on the left it is 2 and to the right it is 1. These swithces when set in concert to the far right or N and 1 produce an image that is almost free of discoloration. It is close to perfect but a little noticable in bright scenes. However, when I set these swiches to the middle or to the left there is much discoloration. The subs are now five feet from the TV and that is the best I can do. What exactly do these switches do and have I damaged this TV? Can it be fixed for a reasonable rate? Thank you for any information.
