"Nine Days in One Year:" from Russia, the fascinating

story of a nuclear scientist who braves exposure to radiation to further critical research. Smoktunovsky and Batalov in the same film? Yes, a brilliant collaboration of two of filmdom's greatest actors. The female lead, Tatyana Lavrova matches them, but decided to pursue a theater career with only (damn!) occasional films. Mikael Romm directs this analysis of scientific motivation--- but it would all fall apart without the arresting story of two men pursuing the same woman--- and the affect their devotion has upon her.

Streaming on the Criterion Channel.
