Billy Wilder besides being a brilliant film maker was a great wit as well....

When asked once about his Austrian heritage he said... "The Austrians are brilliant people... They made the world believe that Hitler was a German and Beethoven an Austrian".... I read recently, that he was approached in retirement to direct the film version of Schindler's List, but refused as the material would be too difficult for him to relive as he lost his Mother, Grandmother and Step-Father in the Holocaust and instead suggested Spielberg to direct. IMO SL is one of Spielberg's greatest films.
