'Golda': Compelling and smokey . . .

This is a very compelling drama that looks at the "inside" of the 1973 war between Israel and Arab partners Egypt and Syria. Caught off guard, there was little time to plan an effective response. The personality play between cabinet members is a significant part in the story as it moves along.
Golda is fighting on several fronts: getting cobalt treatments for lung cancer, struggling to maintain a confident face, trying to divine the truth from cabinet members, and wrestling with the guilt of all the dead "boys" of Israel. Mirren will be in the Oscar race no doubt.
The rest of the cast is excellent and the script lays out the military situation well. Global politics are explained by the appearence of Kissinger (Schreiber).
There is a lot of emotional pain in the film. Enough for this American Goy to feel it.
Must see. It will be interesting to see if this moves the Oscar Meter, which it should.
