It has been a long time since I had 4:3 televisions. My memory, if I recall correctly, is that "full" enlarges a 4:3 program or movie to fill up a 16:9 screen horizontally. This results in part of the picture being cut off at the top and bottom.
"Standard" likely provides a picture in its original and intended aspect ratio on a 16:9 screen.
Just try both settings and see what happens.
