Your tv should have some kind of digital out, usually optical cable. Basically you need something compatible with your avr. Newer tv's have hdmi arc which is hdmi audio output but your avr must be newer to accept it. Everything over the air is usually at least Dolby digital 5.1 including the news.

Depending on where you live you may be able to get away with a cheap antenna but if you're a bit out of range or have hills a good antenna is a must. This is the best indoor/outdoor antenna you can get without going to a huge outdoor antenna.
