The moral of this superb film is, we all play chess with death. We are all on remission. Death has no answer to any questions.
Not even to live.
The perfect antidote to materialism.
The intimate & ultimate quest to answers. But there are none, but live itself.
Wonderful.
In its own kind, this is the best film in the world I am aware of.

A wonderful film, to be sure, one of the best movies ever made.
Interesting, that we just watched another Bergman's film - the Serpent's Egg. That one, while having many of the Master's traditional fingerprints and incredible cinematography, falls far short of the poignant nature of the earlier B&W works.

  I never like it, and just heard on the Criterion DVD that it was never really liked from the Bergmanian, it was filmed at the time he lived in München, having financial trouble in his country...

I have seen the Criterion DVD for sale here in town, but keep forgetting to research the film. A keeper?
