Tony Leung proves he's one of the world's great contemporary leading men in this close examination of love. His progression from disinterest to interest to infatuation to love is a wonder, with nary a hint of histrionics, bombast, or "acting."
This film has a Proustian quality in its deliberateness, attention to detail, and inevitability.
The score is haunting and skillfully used: it compliments scenes instead of announcing or dominating them.
If ever there was an epic film of love (or a film of epic love...), "In the Mood for Love" is it.

from under the bed and then left!!!What a film!
One of my favorites. 2046 is also great- remeber the room he moved into later? It was room 2046 and the story carris forth from there in 2046 with different women.
which is supposedly kind of a sequel to "In the Mood.." I've seen 2046 and found it, um, intriguing, but I haven't seen "In the Mood" yet..

2046 is very similar to Lynche's Mulholland Drive, and everything that implies...

Agreed, a fascinating, almost trance-like love film.
The score is beautiful.

imperceptively are moved from one heart-felt scene to another. No filler, no art for art's sake shots.
The result is that Wai can deliver a much heavier, fuller-storied feature than other filmmakers. Also, his style of cutting from one confusingly framed shot to another allows him more deliberately to pace the film than others: the viewer pays rapt attention or soon is lost.
