Is DVI better than component cable for hook up? I have my progressive scan DVD player and my High Definition cable box connected to the SONY RPTV using high quality compnent cbles. The audio is connected directly to the processor via optical cables. What would I gain by switching to a DVI hookup for the video (both tha cable box and the DVD player have a DVI out and the TV has DVI in)? I have been told that there would be no improvement but I see many here that use DVI.

I have found the DVI connection between the Marantz DV-8400 DVD player and the Marantz VP-12S2 or VP-12S3 projector to be superior to the component video connection, but my colleagues who have experience with a variety of source components and displays tell me that this is not always the case. Whether the DVI connection is superior (as it's supposed to be, given that it's a more direct "digital" connection) depends on the implementation--with some combination of components, the component connection yield better results (more linear frequency response). As with most things, you have to try it and see.
You didn't mention the model or what type of Rear Projection display you had. Is it CRT or LCD?I don't know about Sony's RP CRT models, but the only all digital connection via DVI for their RP LCD displays is available solely with the very latest GW III XBR models. All of the rest of Sony's past (WE and XBR models) and current (WE models) RP LCD line convert the DVI digital input to analog for the video processing.
If you have a Rear Projection CRT model and the DVI signal really does remain in the digital domain, you should see a small (subtle) improvement. Otherwise, the DVI input only serves as just that -- an input, not an improvement.
With a DVI or HDMI connection, the biggest improvements can be seen with fixed pixel displays (plasma, DLP, LCD, etc).

Thanks. BTW the SONY RPTV is a CRT model so I guess I shouldn't bother.

As for the TV only, DVI is superior if your display is anything other than a CRT.
"As for the TV only, DVI is superior if your display is anything other than a CRT."This may be true with DVI on some CRT tv's but isn't it true that the latest sets bypass the A/D D/A conversion resulting in superior picture even on a CRT set?
I can't say for sure that this is the case with my early 16:9 CRT tv but given that 720p and 1080i upscaling is available only via DVI from my Denon DVD player, I do see a big difference here with DVI over standard 480p via component video connections.
