About 18 months ago I called a computer company's 800 service number because my computer was dying. I got a woman who spoke beautiful English with a slight accent that I couldn't place and didn't think anything of. The connection sounded like she was next door. For about 45 minutes she patiently walked me through various repair procedures (I'm a computer idiot). One of the procedures involved changing and then changing back the date on the computer. When it came to changing the date back, I forgot what the date was, so I asked her. She said, "Well, it's February 9 [or whatever] here, but I believe it's February 8 there." Which led to my discovering that she was in India, where it was 2 a.m. or 4 a.m.
The woman was far more patient, polite, professional and helpful, and spoke better English, than most here. At the end of the call, I repeatedly thanked her, on the assumption that company might be monitoring the call to rate her performance, and I wanted her to get the credit she deserved. Based on that call, you can outsource to India all you want as far as I'm concerned.

I on the other hand tried to get a video pivot driver for my fancy new Dell LCD display at work. I wasted a lot of time talking to Dell Tech Support guy, who had a heavy accent, and was zero help.Based upon that experience, I then went and purchased a Samsung LCD for my home PC :) I've actually spoke to Sammie's tech support in New Jersey.

Samsung makes some of the best LCD screens with a 3-year warranty to boot. I have two 17" Samsungs side-by-side in my home office in a 'dual-head' setup on one PC. Makes me more efficient at multitasking with my important applications open on both screens - Not having to switch between apps on one screen or 'shrinking' the app to fit one screen has really helped my productivity. I'm not into 'gaming' but I suppose having two screens is a real competitive advantage here too.

Corporate has found it cheaper to send telephone operations (customer service, helpdesk, etc) to India and other parts East rather than used good ole American workers like prisoners and welfare recipients. George W. has even given a tax incentive to insure that this will be the wave of the immediate future.

Hate to be political, but, as one of President Carter's economic advisors noted, the tax incentive which Kerry refers to was actually present two decades before Bush ever took office. He also stated that only 2.5% of the outsourced jobs are due to the tax break. Which, of course, begs the question as to why this tax break was never important to Kerry all the years he was in the Senate, given that he never sought to repeal the tax.

a few firms have moved these operations back to the USA from, exactly for the reasons you cite about the inefficacy of overseas operations. I suppose only the firms that truly care about customer service would do such a thing!
