I am sure you have seen the latest DVD showdown right? What I do not understand about this test is this..... They only seem to measure picture quality and say nothing about sound. Am I wrong to think that a dvd player could produce better sounds then others? I mean if 1 DVD player can play redbook CD's better then others, shouldn't the sound in movies be better as well? I just wonder if sound reproduction was included in the test the results might be totally different! Or am I totally mistaken? I only ask as I am trying to figure out what route to take in getting a new DVD and CD player to go with my new MMG's

in which case the DVD player's audio performance is a non-player. In my case, I'm very interested in the DVD player's audio performance since I'm using the DVD player's DACs for multichannel SACD playback via an analog MC preamp/switcher.I'm also contemplating the idea that serious music playback can be done better with a source not constrained by support for DVD-V playback (and associated video circuitry "messiness" . I.e. separate sources for both DVD-V and SACD/CD playback would be the ideal.

We have compared several DVD players using digital audio output to a receiver/processor, and the sound varies a lot, either using CDs or DVDs...

Yes I have a Chepo DVD player now, and plan to change my sources completely. I plan to go with a Seperate DVD player and CD player to optimise both. For DVD I am considering the Denon 1600 for its picture quality, and a Tweaked Music Hall 25 or Ah Njoe Tjoeb for CD playback.
What I am wondering is... Can the sound of a movie be different from 1 DVD player or 1 DAC to the next? People always rate DVD sound by how well it plays CD's in it. I could care less about that as I will have a dedicated CD player. But how about the sound in movies. I always use the scene in Lord Of The Rings where they are in a cave and the (Fire) monster is after them to show people the performance of my system in HT form. There you have ground shaking Bass, and wizz sounds from the Arrows, for an exciting few minutes of HT sound. I was just wondering if how that sounds could be increased through different DVD players or a seperate DAC? Right now my $59.00 Toshiba is just a transport to the DAC in my Yamaha RX-V2300 Receiver.
