Just out of curiosity, if one had big high-end speakers for a home theater and lots of space, how many seats could large home systems acceptably cover? For example, if one had the biggest JBL synthesis system which covers approx. 75,000 cubic feet, how many seats could you cover with that system? 30, 50, 100 people? Specifically how many people could be sitting in the sweet spot assuming one had large fullrange home speakers in all 5 or 6 channels? I had this silly idea of what if someone built a private cinema with home speakers instead of commerical ones, with the idea of actually having soundstaging, imaging, etc for the greatest number of people. Could something like that actually work?
No thoughts anyone?

Check out the IMAX cimenas...they are setup with 5 full range speakers & a giant subwoofer. I have always found the sound to be very good. But you have to remember when you are trying to fill a big space, you need REALLY big speakers. Horns come into their own in such spaces. I recall some of the old style cimenas that had only 2 speakers (horn style) behind the screen & they sounded great (unlike some of the multiplexes). You were often left with the impression there were speakers behind you, even though there weren't any! They also used tube amps. That is one reason I keep kicking around the idea of going for horns & tubes...

Yeah, thats true, IMAX uses a home theater like setup, but they also have custom made speakers over 6ft tall! I have a IMAX just down the block from me at the Henry Ford Museum. They used to do this really cool effect just before the show started where they made the screen transparent and you could see the system behind. What would you use to fill a 50 seat home theater? I only know of three big horn makers: Aventguarde, Living Voice, and Calix.
There is an interesting idea, tudes in a theater....you certainly would never find that in a commerical theater right now.
