should check out this film (Criterion Channel). Usually, I don't like theater pieces transferred to films, but this one is special. It's based on the Ibsen play, but principal Wallace Shawn brilliantly adapted it--- and it's been a piece he and Andre Gregory have been perfecting for decades.
It may shock some to know that "My Dinner" wasn't two guys playing themselves, at all. It also was a carefully written and rehearsed (over years) piece that is so natural you may have a hard time convincing yourself otherwise.
Julie Hagerty is brilliant as the wife--- I've not seen her in anything except for "Airplane" and was shocked at her range in this.
High recommendation.
Warning: no fist-fights, bludgeonings, stabbings, explosions, or blood-letting occurs. However, there is plenty of deeply wounding, brilliant dialogue...
Follow Ups:
Much better IMO than the reviews lead me to believe. Certainly not as good as Vanya on 42nd Street, but I was really sucked into it and appreciated what was being done.
