Nothing of what I've read of Bergman describes him as being much interested in religion, outside of having this as a recurring theme in his films
I've seen this film and didn't rate it that highly ( compared to say, Strawberries or Whispers and Crys )
It's been a while, tho' and I will try and hunt this out again as the film will be the same, but I might have changed ( ! )

Not only was he brought up in religion, but he was looking for a God for a long time.
He would not have made this a central theme of many of his films if it would not have been a subject of passion....
