Sorry folks....I didn't like it. Way too long, and actually pretty depressing. Thought Casey Affleck did a nice job, and was quite believable, but overall I've seen better.

...is "depressing" a critique, or incidental to your criticism? Life can surely be depressing, so it doesn't appear to me that a movie that explores or evokes depression (if in a creative way) is necessarily doing a bad thing.
Of course you have every right in the world to prefer not watching films you find depressing, but I don't know that, in general, the quality is to be rejected ipso facto.
I'm not talking about the film in any way here, by the way. Haven't seen it. But the way you phrased your reaction raised this as a possible point for discussion.
What do others think about this?
I agree with you that a depressing movie doesn't make it a bad movie perse. Actually, there are some movies I found quite depressing (Sand Pebbles, Deerhunter) that are on my top ten list, so that, in and of itself, was not the reason for my opinion. My basic criteria for an A rating for movies are 1)would I watch it again, and 2)would I recommend it. Personally, I'd give this one a C. My opinion obviously.
Thanks for the clarification.
One would think the story line of these ancient epics would make for damned depressing fare but the terrible, almost unthinkable ills which befall the characters don't happen to wooden creatures but to flesh and blood that, no matter how hideous the injuries, keeps on living, triumphing over adversity if only for that continuance. Also, each main character generally has a fatal flaw which is exposed and which eventually is recognized by the wiser protagonist at play's end.
To just show depravity, terrible events, and havoc, however, hardly qualifies as art. After all, the world is full of terrors and the grave awaits us all: how hard is it to paint a desperate, depressing picture?
The consummate skill to produce art in a dramatic sense means creating something which uplifts or makes the human seem less... inhuman.
...as depravity for depravity's sake is pretty pointless and probably self-indulgent much of the time. But Troutbum didn't place "depressing" in that context. It was an offhand reference to depressing without any distinctions being made.
some of the best films ever were quite downers.
