at first this Judd Apatow alternative universe seemed fun and even liberating. This is the universe where the most intimate details of peoples' sex lives are part of their minute-to-minute conversations wherever they are, whatever they are doing. The best of this genre was Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And now Kevin Smith has jumped on board. And it's more of the same with the same people. There were a few laughs. The relationship story was just plain silly and utterly predictable. Many of the minor characters were great, the gay porn guy with the really deep voice notably. It all comes down to writing in the end, whether the talk is of sex or of anything else. And I did not think the writing was too sharp here.
Follow Ups:
Kevin Smith peaked 15+ years ago. Since Clerkks & Chasing Amy, he has made a series of crappy flicks. Apatow's contributions to comedy ended more recently, after the release of Knocked Up & Superbad.
Both of these guys (especially Smith) should look for a new gig.
.... for the most part but I did enjoy Dogma.
