I suppose the Sir Ben character devised that line to help justify his getting laid as often as possible. Must be terrible to be that age and be so frightened...
He and Dennis Hopper's lines and dialog about women and relationships were abysmal and pathetic.

Doesn't matter who wrote it; the line belongs to the character (unless he was quoting Roth, which would be far too unlikely).
But now, rethinking that line (and the character) you may be right and I may very well have initially missed the point due to the Kingsley character
being such a liar and coward - so full of so much failure that the desperation for that line to ring true would be dire.
